Globalization pervades every aspect of our life. This is particularly true with vascular intervention – both coronary and peripheral. Although it has always been the purpose of this symposium to present that which is new and different in coronary and endovascular intervention, it has been equally important to place the avant garde in perspective. This 27th annual symposium is focused on creating such a perspective. Our international format with faculty from five continents gives us a worldwide perspective illustrating the cutting edge work performed both in and outside the US. Equally important is the perspective of how differing socioeconomic factors alter the performance of PCI in different cultures and different countries – usually achieving comparable results.
KEY THEME OF THE SYMPOSIUM
Are we putting in too many stents, or too few stents? Or, are we putting the wrong stents in the wrong people or the wrong lesions?
During the past six years there has been an unparalleled assault on the efficacy of coronary stents, stent complications and indications for stenting. While the assault began with colleagues in the scientific community, the press, third party carriers, the government and now even the courts have jumped on the bandwagon. Doctors’ privileges have been questioned, licenses revoked and careers ruined over accusations of too many stents. Yet, droves of people in their
prime of life are experiencing major myocardial infarction and sudden death – many of which may have been preventable with timely stenting.
We have asked nine key opinion leaders to give nine talks with the same title. These talks will be interspersed throughout the week. Despite the common titles, we anticipate nine extremely different viewpoints. Friday morning will be devoted to a thorough discussion of these issues. Attendees are encouraged to voice their own viewpoints on a topic that is of critical importance to the interventional cardiology community and our patients.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This symposium is designed for interventional cardiologists, clinical cardiologists, basic scientists, vascular medicine specialists, nurses, cath lab technicians, and other health care professionals with a special interest in the field of interventional and vascular medicine.
